What to Expect During Cognitive Rehabilitation
“I am not what happened to me. I am what I choose to become.”
– Carl Jung
Why do Cognitive Rehabilitation?
The goal of cognitive rehabilitation is pretty straightforward: to help you get to the highest level of cognitive functioning possible.
Depending on your situation, this may include:
- Being more independent at home
- Being able to go back to work or school
- Maximize your performance at work
- Regain skills lost after a stroke or brain injury
- Develop skills that may have been affected by a medical condition
What to Expect During Therapy?
During cognitive rehabilitation therapy, we focus on helping you regain lost skills, develop ways to compensate for weaknesses, and learn new ways to optimize your brain functioning. Each treatment plan is tailored to your particular areas of strength and weakness, as well as to your background and interests.
The main treatment approaches are:
- Cognitive retraining (cognitive exercises and stimulation)
- Cognitive neuropsychological strategies
- Cognitive behavioral psychology
These three approaches are combined into a blended plan that meets your needs. Depending on your particular situation, we may suggest that your cognitive rehabilitation would benefit from a multi-disciplinary team of professionals and may refer you to a speech-language pathologist, occupational or physical therapist, vocational counselor, social worker, and/or psychiatrist.
The duration of treatment varies widely by patient given the tailored nature of this therapy. Together we will achieve your goals one step at a time.
